Mark Power at the Walker Cup
On Saturday and Sunday last Mark Power, Honorary Life member of Kilkenny Golf Club (celebrating it’s 125 anniversary), became the first member since the Club’s foundation to represent GB & Ireland on the Walker Cup team.
This was an incredible honour for Mark, his parents Eddie and Eileen Rose Power, his brother Kevin and extended family.
We have always known that Mark is an exceptional talent, so it should have come as no surprise to us, how well he played on the very tough Semonile course and how he carried himself on the world stage.
However, the imperious nature of his three victories, two with fellow Irishman John Murphy, was an amazing feat for one so young and to contribute 25% of the total of 12 points that the team achieved in a narrow defeat to the USA was beyond everyone’s wildest dreams (except perhaps Marks!)
Along the way, Mark took the scalp of the number 3 amateur player in the world, David Thompson, in an impressive 3&2 singles victory on Saturday afternoon.
In the morning foursomes and coming from 3 down the Irish partnership won 4 of the last 6 holes to win the match on the 18th green.
Mark’s 100% record on Saturday was therefore, a crucial part in the fact that the GB& Ireland team trailed by only two points going into Sunday.
On Sunday morning, Mark and John led the team out first and began their match birdie, birdie, eagle to leave the hotly fancied USA pair Coody and Pak, no’s 2 and 4 in the world, reeling and 3 down. This set the foundation for a hard-fought win with Mark lagging a magnificent putt on the 18th to close the match out.
Mark was given the honour of leading the team off for the afternoon singles where he suffered his only defeat of the weekend, after a gruelling schedule.
Unfortunately, the GB and Ireland team lost out by only 2 points to one of the strongest ever teams from the USA in the Walker Cup.
It augurs well for the future and we look forward to following Marks’s progression closely over the coming years.
On Sunday evening we sent the following message to Mark, on behalf of the Captains, Presidents, officer’s, members, and staff of the club.
Many congratulations on your selection for the GB and Ireland Walker Cup team for 2021, and for your magnificent performance in Seminole over the weekend.
You are a credit to your family, and you are an incredibly special ambassador for Kilkenny Golf Club, making so many of the members, young and old, so proud and so happy to see you performing at such a high level.
We know that you had only a few supporters present in Florida, but rest assured there were hundreds of Kilkenny Golf Club members watching your every shot and walking the fairways with you, if only through our TV screens.
Your record of three wins over the weekend, in such exalted company, was exceptional for one of the youngest players on the team and the honour of leading the team off twice on Sunday is a testament to the esteem you are held in by the GB & Ireland Management Team and the belief that they have in your ability.
We know that you may be disappointed that the Team did not bring home the trophy but, through your victories and defeat, you will be a stronger competitor and bolstered for future campaigns with the experience that you have gained playing with your Teammates and opponents alike, on such a world stage.
Very importantly you are inspiring so many of our Juvenile and Junior golfers to enjoy and excel at the game.
We look forward to seeing you again in the Summer when Kilkenny Golf Club will have the opportunity to honour your great achievement.
In the meantime, we wish you all the best for the remainder of your sporting and academic year in Wake Forest.”
With the timesheets not under too much pressure the restrictions on bookings will be eased from today. Along with your one booking in each block (Sat to Sun and Mon to Fri) players may book rounds by logging in after 6.30pm any evening and if there slots available on the following days timesheet they may book them. They may do this each evening if they so wish.
If fairness to everyone we would request that players comply with the 6.30pm timeframe to ensure everyone gets an equal chance to book.
