Team Results

Thursday, 01 July. Barton Shield v Rosslare

After a first round bye, Kilkenny took on Rosslare, who had defeated Enniscorthy in round one.

Going in as under”cats” (pun please note), the Kilkenny quartet of youth and experience faced a strong challenge.

In this format of foursomes, the aggregate score from both matches are added to find the winner and with one pair in Kilkenny and the other in Rosslare, keeping up to date with the scores was very difficult.

At home, the youthful pairing of Harry Duggan and Jeff Kealy came up against a very strong pairing and found themselves three down after nine, despite playing very respectably and just a couple over par.

In Rosslare, the experienced pair of Alan O’Rourke and Richie Guilfoyle were taking on Rosslare’s best and despite losing a hole early on and playing great golf they took a three hole advantage to the ninth tee.

At this stage honours even overall.

Rosslare, mounting a fight back at home reduced the margin to one hole and Richie and Alan using all their recent, All Ireland Junior Cup success experience faced up to the challenge.

Meanwhile in Kilkenny Harry and Jeff faced into the back nine with determination and took four holes in a row and were standing on 14, 1 up.

After exchanging holes on the way in they managed to close the game out winning by 1 hole after a superb 2 under back nine.

All now depended on the match in Rosslare and Alan and Richie didn’t disappoint closing the match out on the 16th leaving Kilkenny 3 holes up with 2 holes left.

Great credit to the team.

Next up are the winners of Baltinglass and Carlow.

Managers:-Dermot Doyle & Mark Shortall.

Thursday, 01 July. Pierce Purcell v Athy

Kilkenny played Athy in the second round of the Pierce Purcell last Thursday.

Kilkenny had three matches at home and two away.

In what turned out to be a very tight and sporting match, Kilkenny progressed by 3.5 to 1.5.
At home, Paul Carroll & David Mulcahy, out first, came up against very strong opponents and having been down for most of the match played some great golf to win a titanic battle on the 18th.

Joe Casey and Cathal O’Neill played the second match at home and again, having been two down after 11, produced great golf to win their match on the 18th.

Away from home Paschal Connolly and Damien McLoughlin secured a great win on 18th to ensure Kilkenny’s passage into the third round. Michael Whelan and Noel Maher came up against a strong pair and gave everything but just came up short.

Kilkenny’s third pairing at home, was Bernard McDonald & Eugene Buckley, and were one down playing the 18th when called in.

A tremendous effort by the team reaped great rewards.

Managers:- Derek Shelly

Sunday, 04 July. Mixed Foursomes v Baltinglass

Kilkenny were beaten in the Mixed Foursomes by Baltinglass on last Sunday.

In Baltinglass, Richard Duggan & Marian Woods were beaten on 15th.

Rory MacEneaney & Ella Dunphy were beaten on 18th, having come back from three down after three holes.

At Home, Brendan Dowling & Ana Lyons, conceding three shots to their opponents, were called in on 17, when they were all square.

Simon Cullen & Joan Cody were beaten on the 15th, by an exceptional pair, having given them two shots.

John Marnell & Evelyn Crotty were called in on 15 and were all square, giving their opponents five shots.

The Kilkenny team fought a very hard battle against a very good Baltinglass team.
