Last Saturday & Sunday, Kilkenny Golf Club hosted Club President, John O’Donovan’s prize for men.
As testament to the excellent work that John has given to the club over the years, 280 plus members battled for his specially commissioned prize, a painting by, local artist, Maeve Doherty of the 13th green.
Whilst weathers conditions, did not vary much over the week-end the best of the scoring was done on the Saturday.
Both the first and second placed contestants played on the Saturday.
The overall winner, Philip Cross posted, what proved to be an unassailable score of 43 points, whilst second placed PJ Martin shot an excellent 41points to secure second place.
Both these players were the only contestants to break the 40 points total all week-end.
The presentation took place in the Clubhouse on Sunday evening and the winner, Philip Cross, congratulated The President on his successful year in office and expressed his delight at winning such a unique and beautiful prize.

Kilkenny Golf Club 1896- 2021
This year marks the 125th anniversary of the founding of Kilkenny Golf Club.
To mark the occasion and to show appreciation for the support that members have given to the club over the past two difficult years the Management Committee have decided to run a complimentary Members Classic over the weekend of Friday-Monday, 10-13 September.
The details are as follows:
Date:- Friday, 10th to Monday, 13 September inclusive.
Format:- Four Person team event.
Entry:- Free and will include a Meal, served after play.
Handicap:- No limit but, Playing Handicap subject to Golf Ireland recommendation of 85% of Course Handicap.
Prizes:- Minimum 10 prizes, to include an All Ladies team, All Junior team and All Seniors team (over 65 – membership categories)
All teams will be entered into a draw for a golfing break to Portugal to take place over the Easter weekend, next April.
This will include five nights Bed & Breakfast, in the Vila Gale Hotel in Cascais, Portugal, with two rounds of golf in Penha Longa and Lisbon Sports Club.
Flights are not included.
From a safeguarding perspective, under 18’s are not eligible to win the raffle or a prize involving overnight accommodation (unless playing with a parent) but can win any other prize.
As soon as Covid rules allow it is proposed to have a celebration night in the club at which former PRO Tom Brett will show a huge collection of photographs relating to Kilkenny Golf Club going back to the 1960’s.
Work is also taking place on restoring and displaying the existing collection of club photographs with plans to incorporate these photographs in to a history section on the club website.
Club Matchplay Competitions
The various club matchplay competitions are progressing, and adhering to the timetable as set out.
Disappointingly, the Bar Cup has fallen behind and competitors need to arrange their matches immediately to ensure the competition of the knock-out stages in readiness for Club Finals day.
Adopt a Green
A proposal was adopted at the last AGM that members be requested to
“Adopt a Green” with respect to the repair of pitch marks.
We are now seeking volunteers who would be prepared to adopt a green, so
that when they are playing, both themselves and their team members would
give special attention to repairing the pitch marks on their designated green.
It is important to note that this proposal will not in any way diminish the
responsibility everybody has to repair pitch marks on the greens.
If you are interested in adopting a green, please forward your name to
enquires@kilkennygolfclub.com
We will then correspond to you on the allocation of the greens.
