Kilkenny, AIG Junior Cup Leinster Champions 2020.
Kilkenny travelled to Millicent Golf Club on Monday afternoon to play Corrstown in the Covid delayed 2020 Junior Cup, Leinster Final.
Corrstown were fast out of the blocks and had taken a solid lead in four of the five matches from early on.
Into the back nine and Kilkenny fought their way back, gradually turning the match on its head. Richie Guilfoyle and Alan O’Rourke, who were hit by some excellent golf from their opponents early on, battled hard only to come up short on 17 and 16 respectively. With the remaining three matches ebbing and flowing, the breakthrough came when Sam Dunlop closed out his match 3/2 and with Brendan Dowling winning 2/1, it fell to Simon Cullen to clinch the winning point on the 19th hole.
Heartiest congratulations to all the team and their mentors on winning the Leinster final.
It is the first Leinster final win for the club in the Junior Cup competition.
Their reward is, an immediate turnaround and a trip to Donegal, for some practice before the All-Ireland Finals on Thursday and Friday.
Team:- Alan O’Rourke, Brendan Downing, Sam Dunlop,
Simon Cullen, Richie Guilfoyle.
Reserves:- John Maher & Liam O’Hara
Managers:- Luke Kelly & Aidan McDonald.
Kilkenny will face Ulster champions, Balmoral, at 08.45hrs on Thursday morning. The other semi-final has paired Castletroy and Ballinasloe. The final will be played Friday morning.
After contacting Golf Ireland again this morning we have been informed that due to logistical issues in Murvagh unfortunately no spectators will be allowed attend the finals and only the 11 (7 Players, 2 Managers, Club Officer & Covid Officer) can attend.
On behalf of both Captains, Paul & Ber, the Management Committee, Members & Staff of Kilkenny Golf Club we extend our best wishes to, Luke, Aidan, Anthony, Alan, Brendan, John, Liam, Richie, Sam & Simon every success in their endeavours to bring further glory to Kilkenny Golf Club.
Sean had a Whats App group in operation for the Leinster Final and although there will be less bodies present in Donegal to operate updates we hope to keep all those interested up to-date. The App is now renamed “Junior Cup All Ireland”, Sean will maintain those who were on the app last weekend unless they contact him to be removed and anyone else who wishes to be added please send message to Sean on 087 1250853.
Club Singles Qualifier
There was a big turnout for the Club Singles Qualifier last week-end with 227 members playing for one of the 31 places on offer in the match play stages. They will be joined by last year’s winner Richie Guilfoyle.
John Meagher, playing off four, shot a superb three under gross for a nett 64 to be the clear winner. Only six players, who shot 71, made the cut. You may check the notice board to see if you are one of the six.
Those members who qualified, are requested to inform the Competition Secretary or Sean in the office, as to their availability to contest the match play stages. If you are unable to play, your place, in the matchplay will be given to the next leading contender.
Withdrawals must be confirmed before mid-day, Friday, 11 June.
The draw will take place on Saturday, 12th.
The Purse system which was recently introduced in the club comprises three individual purses linked to your Golf Ireland card and membership number namely:
1. Bar Purse which has been operational for some years.
2. Competition Purse through which all entry to competitions will be facilitated.
3. Subscription Purse which allows a member to save for next year’s annual subscription.
The competition Purse will become operational for competitions from the weekend of 19/20th June, (booking on Friday, 11 June) for the Mens Bar Cup Qualifier and the Ladies 18 Hole Singles.
From 19 June the only way to enter a competition is through the Competition Purse. It will not be possible to pay the entry fee in cash after June 19th
The implication of this for members is as follows:
– A member should have sufficient money in the purse either to book a time in a competition via BRS or for another member to book them in as a playing partner.
– The entrance fee for the competition is taken from the purse of the member entered on BRS regardless of who actually makes the booking.
– The Competition Purse will allow a player to overdraw it to the extent of 1 competition
entrance fee i.e. €6. Players are requested to have the purse pre-funded. The €6 overdrawn limit will cover an emergency situation, allowing a player to book a time in a competition, where a player may have forgotten to top up the purse. It will not be possible to book a time on a timesheet if the card is already overdrawn.
– If a player cancels their booking before 6.00 p.m. on the evening preceding the day of
competition the entrance fee will be automatically credited back to their purse.
There will be no refund for a player cancelling a time after 6.00 p.m. of the preceding day. A player who has to cancel after 6.00 p.m. due to an emergency may seek a refund and a decision on same will be made by the Competitions committee.
Please note the Club opened for the outdoor service of Tea/Coffee and Beverages from Monday, June 7th. This service will continue for the immediate future and will be reviewed once further directives are received from the various governing bodies.
Opening hours will continue to be 10.30hrs. to 18.00hrs.
Volvo Car Key
We have a Volvo car key handed in some months ago if anyone is missing same.
Practice Ground. – Health & Safety
With ever increasing numbers using the practice area, the Health & Safety of members using the area has become an issue.
There are six stations set out on the Practice ground and there is a roped off area at each of these stations from where people must hit their practice shots.
You are reminded to use these areas only when hitting your shots.
It is not permissible to practice from any other point.
When you are collecting you golf balls you are not permitted to hit balls to a central location for collection.
More comprehensive guidelines for using the Practice ground safely, will be issued in the next couple of weeks.

Ladies Get into Golf
Preparations are ongoing for the Get into Golf Programme 2021. The programme generated enormous interest, with nearly 50 Ladies submitting their names hoping to participate.
To ensure that the programme is run to the highest standards and that the Club can fully support the participants, it was necessary to shortlist the numbers to 30 Ladies.
The Covid restrictions also had to considered, taking the advice from Golf Ireland to limit the number of participants.
The successful applicants have now received their offer of a place on the programme which is scheduled to commence week of Monday, 14 June. We are actively seeking members to act as volunteers on the programme and anyone who is interested in helping out, in any way, can contact Martina Naughton, Programme Co-Ordinator.
In running this event, Kilkenny Golf club is fulfilling one of it’s commitments under the Women in Golf Charter, to recruit more women and young girls into the club.
