CAPTAINS DRIVE IN SUNDAY 12th FEBRUARY

Captains Seamus Rochford and Pauline Cullinane held their Captains Drive In on Sunday and it was testimony to the popularity of both of them that close on 150 members turned out to support them and play in the 13 hole competition that accompanied the drive in. Both captains hit impeccable drives off the first tee. Pauline was up first and hit one straight down the middle, Seamus next up trusted his dependable 3 wood and sent one down the middle also with a slight draw to gain an extra few yards. Besides those who played in the competition a large number of Past Captains and other members turned out to witness the drive in and to wish both Captains the best of luck in their year.

After the drive in all the players headed off to the various tees for a shotgun start. The winners of the 4 person team event were Billy Burke (10) John O’Leary (18) Pat Collins (10) and Margaret Gahan (36) with 66 pts. Second place on 64 pts went to Eddie Power (+1) Paddy Lawlor (19) Richie McEvoy (15) and Catherine Leahy (27). The remaining prizes were won by two scores of 63 and four scores of 62pts.

The day was excellently organised by Vice Captains Luke Kelly and Sheila Brennan and they were ably assisted by their social committee. Barry Joyce and his staff served up a lovely hot plate for all the contestants after the golf.

Saturday’s Crosscard competition was a 13 hole v par competition and the winners were P J Martin (8) and Jack Troy (12) with a great score of 9 up. They were one under par better ball for the 13 holes. Jack recorded a birdie on the 4th and PJ on the 6th, the only bogey on their card was on the 5th. P J also featured in 3rd place on 7up with Richie Phelan (16). Members may remember that P J won the set of the Ping G20 irons in the Pro shop Christmas draw and they are obviously starting to pay dividends. Second place on Saturday went to Mark Shortall (6) and Maurice Ryan (14) with a better 7up than PJ and Richie.

The first Ladies 13 Hole Competition of the season took place last week. It was an ABC stroke competition, the winner of Class A was Bridie McGarry (8) with 55 2/3 net, Class B was won by Cecily Costelloe (21) with 57 net and Class C was won by Joan Cashin (29) with 57 2/3 net. The gross was won by Mary Leahy Browne (3) with 61 gross.

The Senior Men’s competition last Thursday was played over 14 holes from the 5th to the 18th. The winners with a score of 72 pts were Dom Murphy (13) Paddy Byrne (21) Jack Nolan (22) and Eamon Brennan (28). They had 36 points over the last six holes where they managed to chalk up nine pars between them over the 14 holes. Second place on 72 pts went to Pat Walshe (10 ) Martin Treacy (21) Maurice Ryan (20) and Paddy Halley (25). Pat was very prominent on the card and covered the last six holes in one under par with five pars from the 13th to the 17th and finished it off with a birdie on the 18th.

The Senior Ladies competition was won by Sheila Brennan, Eileen Reynolds and Mary Shields.

PITCHMARKS & DIVOTS

In an effort to improve the repair of pitch marks we are going to re introduce the adopt a green programme. We request 18 members to come forward to take charge of a green, when we have the eighteen in place we will place a sheet on the notice board and request that at least five people add their names to each hole. The 18 members who come forward to take charge of a green must take responsibility to organise and rota their group. Those willing to start the process are requested to contact the office with their names. To date three members have come forward to take responsibility for a green. The 1st, 17th and 18th have been allocated at this stage; hopefully the remainder will be taken up inside the next week. As soon as we have allocated the remaining 15 holes we will place a sheet on the Mens notice board where other members who wish to help out can add their names. Please contact Sean in the office for further details.

ROPES & STANCHIONS

Ropes and stanchions are positioned around most of the greens at the moment to protect them from excessive wear and tear at this time of the year. Players are requested not to remove these ropes and stanchions, it has been reported that some people are walking on the ropes and as a result pulling down the stanchions.

Please do not remove these ropes and please make your around them to the side of the greens.
